Special Children’s Center

The Special Children’s Center in Lakewood, New Jersey was looking to create a magical playland to enhance their care center, where children with physical and emotional challenges could engage in educational activities and find their creative spark.

They brought in legendary Creative Director and Designer David Korins, who boldly envisioned a multipurpose environment that could accommodate both performance and play. David’s spectacular designs were then turned over to our team to make a reality. We adapted the concept to work with pandemic limitations, budget, and timeframe. Our creative team crafted animated fly-throughs, seamlessly interfacing with the Korins’ team, to deliver a dynamic simulation that allowed the client to immerse themselves in the different play zones in advance of build.

Once the client signed off and the final design solidified, we got to work executing this musical masterpiece – transforming 2500 sq feet of space into a vibrant, whimsical, wonderland. Theatre programs will be able to unfold upon an epic electric guitar stage standing over 20-feet-tall by 35’ wide. Kids can cultivate agility on a jungle gym featuring oversized climbable musical instruments. This remarkable room has sparkle power with 165,000 sequins lining the walls, along with a mega microphone chandelier flanked by 8, 5’ long trumpets.

A dynamic drum kit punctuates this high-octane environment, along with a custom-fabricated jukebox, and a sculptural piano keyboard.

The Special Children’s Center permanent play space was a project years in the making. It brought music to life in unexpected ways and provided special needs kids with a safe space to explore and create.
